The Sexy Shrimp is one of the most asked for Shrimps among the antire aquaria world. These fellows are beautiful pumping their butts to defend themselves from other predators. They are mainly distributed among the Indo-Pacific; from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Line- and Marshall Islands. The maximum body length size for males is 4 cm; females only to 2 to 3 cm. Under aquarium conditions most substitute food is eagerly taken, including brine shrimp, frozen or freeze-dried plankton, as well as flake food; will also feed on detritus. It lives in association with anemones, especially with the Pizza Anemone Cryptodendrum adhaesivum. The transparent body is covered with large white patches. Males have more patches than females, which are also smaller. The tail fan is white and reddish brown. The most frequently available anemone shrimp in the aquarium trade, but it is not a species that is hardy and easy to keep. It can really only be recommended to experienced aquarists, and does also require careful acclimatization. It is imperative that a host anemone is available. Ideally, this shrimp species and its host anemone should be kept in small, peaceful aquarium. We have maintained this species successfully together with anemones of genus Phymanthus.
Shrimps belong to the group of crustaceans known as Caridea. In all carideans the body comprises a thorax covered by a carapace and a muscular abdomen. Two of the five pairs of legs end in claws. Caridean shrimps are most frequently seen wandering on the surface of rocks in rock pools but others burrow in sediments; hide between the fronds of algae, or swim in the midwater of the oceans. Most are marine but some live in rivers and lakes. Many shrimps are brightly colored; others take on the colors of their habitat, but is certain that most shrimps are scavengers & others are active predators.
